The Weekly Letter

Week 42 · 12–18 October 2026 · NY closes Fri 16 Oct · Issue 02

Rotation · Flow · Regime — model output, general market research

The week in five lines

  • Regime read: Mixed, unchanged. Yields and the dollar eased (US10Y 5.081%, real yield 2.78%), but volatility jumped (VIX 14.85 → 19.98) and growth leadership broke.

  • Last week's read vs what followed: consistent. Two of five risk-on measures registered, a Mixed week. Three of nine Week 41 model states recorded a structure break (SPY, QQQ, XLK), all on the growth side.

  • Where money moved: into staples, energy, healthcare, utilities and value; out of semis, software, growth and North Asian tech.

  • Model states: XLE, XLV and EWZ aligned positive; IWM, XLI, ICLN, EZU, EEM, EWY and MCHI aligned negative.

  • Event ahead: no tier-1 US release. UK CPI (Wed 21 Oct) and US flash PMIs (Fri 23 Oct, 14:45 UK) are the main scheduled prints.

Where money moved

The week broke the pattern. Rates eased, which normally helps long-duration growth, yet growth sold off hard: QQQ −5.5%, XLK −7.7%, SMH −10.5%, IGV −7.4%, and the AI supply chain went with it (EWY −15.1%, EWT −7.0%).

Money did not leave equities. It moved to the defensive and real-asset end: XLP +5.0%, XLE +4.9%, XLV +3.5%, XLU +1.9%, and value outperformed growth (IWD +0.9% against IWF −5.0%). Defensives outperformed cyclicals by 5.4% (XLP/XLY), the widest margin in the record. Duration saw its first bid: TLT +2.65%.

On the daily read, leadership rotated in a single week. Leading fell from 12 instruments to 3 (XLE, XLV, EWZ) and Weakening rose from 2 to 9. All nine former leaders closed below their daily EMA55 on Friday.

Model states

Each state carries two model reference levels fixed at publication: the extension level (one daily ATR beyond Friday's close) and the structure level (the daily EMA55). They describe where the model's reading would extend or change; they are not trade levels.

Logs

Regime reads consistent with the following week: 1 of 1 (n = 1). Model states with a structure break: 3 of 9 (n = 9: SPY, QQQ, XLK); the other six are still developing to Week 45. Possible weekly trend transitions flagged: 13. Corrected reports: 0. The full record is on the Logs page.

Positioning

CFTC data to Tue 13 Oct show the context for the speed of the move. Large speculators cut Nasdaq-100 longs and added 6,400 shorts, the largest de-risking on the board. In Treasuries they added 54,000 contracts of 10-year shorts in a week when yields fell. Growth longs were crowded going in; bond shorts are crowded now. Euro shorts are building too, consistent with weak EZU and EFA.

The week ahead

  • Wed 21 Oct, 07:00 UK · UK CPI. Consensus 3.4% from 3.1%.

  • Wed 21 Oct, 15:30 UK · US crude inventories. Relevant to energy, the most extended aligned-positive state.

  • Fri 23 Oct, 14:45 UK · US flash PMIs. The main scheduled test of the growth-versus-defensives rotation this week.
